Holidaymakers booked to stay at Planet Hollywood Adult Scene Cancun, part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection in Costa Mujeres, Mexico, have been contacted by TUI after four recent guests at the property were diagnosed with Legionnaires’ disease.
The operator has confirmed it is notifying all customers due to travel up until mid-August, stressing that investigations indicate the hotel itself was not the source of the illness. However, concerned customers are being invited to contact TUI directly to discuss their booking.
In a letter to customers, TUI explained:
“We have been advised of a potential risk in Legionella bacteria affecting four guests who have recently stayed at the hotel. The hotel you are staying in is not the source of the illness.
The hotel management has processes in place to help manage the risk of Legionella bacteria, including support from a specialist consultancy company. A pre-planned and routine task assessment was conducted at the beginning of July 2025 – all water samples analysed showed no Legionella bacteria present.
As a precaution, the hotel management are undertaking additional disinfection of the hotel water systems. TUI and the hotel management team are arranging for a further visit by our appointed specialist consultants. The hotel will remain open, and you can continue your holiday as planned.”
Legionnaires’ disease is contracted by inhaling water droplets containing Legionella bacteria, typically from sources such as air conditioning units, showers, or hot tubs. It cannot be passed from person to person.
While most people exposed do not become ill, the infection can be more serious for older individuals or those with pre-existing health conditions. Symptoms can include cough, shortness of breath, fever, headaches and muscle aches.
One holidaymaker posted on the Planet Hollywood Cancun – Guest Page on Facebook claiming they were hospitalised for five days after staying at the hotel between 29 June and 3 July, writing:
“This is not a fun thing to deal with. I’m still recovering.”
They did not confirm whether they had travelled with TUI.
