Voted the Best by Condé Nast Traveler Readers
Southeast Asia is home to some of the most breathtaking islands on the planet – a region where lush rainforests meet turquoise seas, and each destination offers something entirely unique. According to the Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards, these are the Top 10 Islands in Southeast Asia, as voted by travellers from around the world.
1️⃣ Phú Quốc, Vietnam

General Commentary:
Phú Quốc has claimed the number one spot, and it’s not hard to see why. Located off the coast of southern Vietnam, this island paradise is known for its pristine beaches, coral reefs, and relaxed atmosphere. Once a quiet fishing island, Phú Quốc has transformed into a sought-after destination with new luxury resorts, yet it still manages to retain much of its local charm. The island’s clear waters and white sands make it ideal for both adventure and serenity.
Kevin’s Comment:
I haven’t been here yet, but it’s becoming so popular with clients requesting quotes. It’s definitely on my list – I must visit soon so I can sell it better with first-hand experience!
2️⃣ Langkawi, Malaysia

General Commentary:
Langkawi, often called the “Jewel of Kedah,” is a beautiful blend of emerald rainforests, tranquil beaches, and scenic cable car views. The island’s duty-free status is a bonus, making it great for shopping. Langkawi attracts visitors who love nature, quiet luxury, and a slower pace of life.
Kevin’s Comment:
It’s a lovely island, but I wouldn’t put it at number two. It’s beautiful but was a little too quiet for me and not quite “paradise” enough to justify the calm. Personally, I preferred Penang in Malaysia, which didn’t make the list!
3️⃣ Koh Samui, Thailand

General Commentary:
Koh Samui is Thailand’s island all-rounder – stunning beaches, lush jungle, great nightlife, and luxury resorts. From yoga retreats to beach clubs and street markets, it offers something for everyone. It’s polished, yet still has that laid-back island charm that keeps visitors coming back year after year.
Kevin’s Comment:
My absolute favourite island in Thailand – this would get my number one spot! It has everything you could want for an island escape. Yes, it’s a little pricier than some of the others, but 100% worth it for the quality and atmosphere.
4️⃣ Boracay, Philippines

General Commentary:
Boracay is world-famous for its dazzling White Beach – a four-kilometre stretch of powdery sand and crystal-clear water. After a period of closure for environmental restoration, the island has bounced back stronger, with sustainable tourism practices in place. Boracay’s sunsets are legendary, and the island’s mix of vibrant nightlife and relaxation makes it a firm favourite for travellers.
Kevin’s Comment:
I’m actually here right now – and it’s blown me away! The beaches are out of this world, the sunsets are to die for, and the people are amazing. There are so many gorgeous resorts for a surprisingly reasonable price. The only downside? It takes two stopovers and a boat ride from the UK – but totally worth it once you arrive. I would put this at number 2!
5️⃣ Palawan, Philippines

General Commentary:
Palawan consistently ranks among the world’s most beautiful islands. Known for the surreal limestone cliffs of El Nido and the hidden lagoons of Coron, it’s a dream destination for nature lovers and photographers alike. The underwater world here is spectacular, making it perfect for divers and snorkellers.
Kevin’s Comment:
Palawan is breathtaking and feels like stepping into a postcard. I always recommend this to clients who want that untouched, adventurous island experience – it’s paradise for explorers.
6️⃣ Bali, Indonesia
General Commentary:
A timeless favourite, Bali is known for its unique blend of beaches, temples, and cultural richness. Whether it’s the surf scene in Canggu, the spiritual vibe of Ubud, or the luxury resorts in Nusa Dua, Bali has something for every traveller. It’s one of those places you can visit again and again and still find something new to love.
Kevin’s Comment:
Ihaven’t been to Bali yet, but it’s one of those places I book every week so I know well. The mix of culture, beaches, and high-end resorts makes it incredibly appealing, and it’s firmly on my list to experience firsthand soon.
7️⃣ Siargao, Philippines
General Commentary:
Siargao has gained international fame as the surf capital of the Philippines, but there’s more to it than just waves. This teardrop-shaped island is full of lagoons, caves, and palm-fringed roads. It’s a favourite among digital nomads and travellers looking for a laid-back, authentic experience.
Kevin’s Comment:
This is high on my personal travel list. It looks raw, real, and unspoiled – exactly the kind of place I love to experience and recommend to clients who want something off the beaten path.
8️⃣ Phuket, Thailand
General Commentary:
Phuket is Thailand’s largest and most famous island, known for its diverse mix of beaches, luxury resorts, and lively nightlife. From the bustling markets of Patong to the quiet coves of Kata Noi, there’s truly something for everyone. Phuket also makes a great base for exploring nearby islands like Phi Phi and Similan.
Kevin’s Comment:
I didn’t enjoy my first trip to Phuket when I stayed only in the Patong area as a youngster — but when I returned years later and explored more of the island, I completely changed my mind and grew to love it. Phuket is brilliant if you like a bit of buzz and energy. It’s great for first-timers to Thailand who want easy access, luxury hotels, and great value. There are lots of quiet family friendly resorts too!
9️⃣ Phi Phi Islands, Thailand
General Commentary:
The Phi Phi Islands are small but stunning, known for their turquoise lagoons and limestone cliffs made famous by The Beach. The islands are perfect for snorkelling, diving, and enjoying that picture-perfect tropical scenery.
Kevin’s Comment:
Yes, it’s touristy – but it’s also breathtaking. I always recommend at least one night here if you’re in Thailand. There’s something truly magical about waking up surrounded by that scenery.
🔟 Lombok, Indonesia
General Commentary:
Just east of Bali, Lombok offers a quieter, more traditional alternative. With dramatic mountains, hidden waterfalls, and pristine beaches, it’s ideal for travellers who want Bali’s beauty without the crowds. The nearby Gili Islands also make for a perfect beach extension.
Kevin’s Comment:
I think Lombok is underrated – it’s got a raw natural beauty and a more local feel. It’s perfect for travellers who’ve “done” Bali and want something a little less commercial.
Final Thoughts
Southeast Asia is an island lover’s dream. Whether it’s the tranquil waters of Phú Quốc, the culture of Bali, or the dazzling beaches of Boracay, each island offers its own unique version of paradise.
And as I often say:
“There’s no such thing as a ‘best’ island – just the one that suits you best.”
