The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has updated its travel advice for Tanzania — including the popular island destination of Zanzibar — following ongoing disruption and unrest linked to the recent national elections on 29 October.
While much of the reported trouble has been concentrated on the mainland, the FCDO’s guidance now extends to Zanzibar as well. Travellers are therefore being advised to avoid all but essential travel to both Tanzania and Zanzibar until further notice.
Current Situation
Following the elections, there have been widespread reports of protests and unrest in certain parts of the country. A curfew from 6pm to 6am remains in place across sections of the mainland, limiting local movement and access to essential services.
In addition, the FCDO notes ongoing shortages of food, fuel, and cash, disruptions to internet access, and uncertainty around international transport options. These conditions are making it increasingly difficult for visitors and locals alike to move freely and safely within Tanzania.
Travel Insurance Implications
It’s important to note that travelling against official FCDO advice may invalidate your travel insurance, meaning you may not be covered for cancellations, medical emergencies, or other issues that arise during your trip.
Advice for Travellers
If you have a holiday booked to Zanzibar or Tanzania, contact your travel agent or tour operator to discuss your options. Most operators will be able to amend or postpone your booking free of charge until the situation stabilises.
Travellers already in the region are advised to:
- Follow all local safety guidance and curfews.
- Monitor FCDO updates regularly.
- Stay in contact with your tour operator or accommodation provider.
- Avoid protests, gatherings, and unnecessary travel after dark.
